yeah, I don't really understand them...
isn't it kinda like have a "Pod Lite" built into the guitar?
would be neat to mess around with, though

I prefer the look of the Les Paul-ish one. I've heard good things about these guitars, and I'm a big fan of Line 6.

Sort of. The Variax is to guitars what the POD is to amps/effects. Instead of simulating amps, it simulates guitars, where you could theoretically switch between a classic Strat sound to a thicker Les Paul sound to Tele twang (and several places in between), without actually switching guitars. Apparently, it'll also mimic alternate tunings.

I still think the old 700 series was the best looking model. Carved top, nice grain, no pickups, vibrato.

The guitar is just ugly. I've heard that their superior guitars to the original Variax models in general and in that they can stand on their own as instruments with a full set of traditional electronics. I just don't need to get modeled sounds of instruments I don't have.

As we've discussed in other threads, live you can see the same band on two nights play the same set one night using all Fender gear and the next using Gibson and Marshalls and the average fan won't be able to tell the difference or care. Even the average musician, if being truly objective, isn't likely to pick up on all of the differences based on an audio only recording of said performances.

Steve Howe played a Variax last time I saw Yes. A fake guitar to go with the fake singer, I guess.
It really didn't sound very good, but I suppose if you need to carry two dozen instruments to sound like you, it beats a bus load of gear.
His 175 sounded killer but that Variax was pretty bland.
