Help! Allman Bros - Mountain Jam

rdkraus

Little Hot Wing
I've been trying to work out the basic beginning licks to this, and the basic chorus (the part that sounds like "First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain...."). It looks like it should be easy, but I can't match what I'm doing to whatever key or scales the Brothers are using. Looked online for tabs etc, which didn't help.

I know this is not a song many play (basically just a format to jam against), but if anyone can help be out with

1. What key are they in?

2. What scales are they using?

3. Tab for the basic parts above?

I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

I don't know this tune at all, but if you could post a YT of the version (there seem to be several) that you're trying to learn, I'll try and have a listen/transcribe some of it, or at least give you some pointers.

This is a great song. And a high quality recording to boot.

There are definitely a lot of major licks. But they mix it up with some other stuff, too. If I get a chance this weekend, I'll see what I can put together. That would be fun.

The main scales here (I've only listened to the first couple of minutes) are E Major Pentatonic and C# minor (natural)..which look like this, note how closely they're related (C#m being the relative minor of EMajor).

This is an example of the type of lick they're using, mixing the above two scales:

That should read "with notes from C#minor in the THIRD bar. Hope this helps somewhat..:)

The Allman Bros were incredibly popular in the distant days of my youth. I wore out several copies of Live at the Fillmore and Eat A Peach. I can't say I've listened to them much in recent years though.

Thanks for taking the time. I'll take a look.

C# Minor ???? LOL - Well, I surely would never have found that myself.
