Hi Guys,

I had to zap the comic thread as it directly relates to politics and religion. It seemed to be a recipe for disaster as far as the rules of MWGL. It had a few funny comments, and this is how these threads have exploded in the past. A funny comment to you might be offensive to others, especially when walking into the area of civil rights and religion. I opted to lock it after seeing a few complaints, and before we wind up with more problems related to the content.

Religion, and politics never turns out good on the Internet. Only thing worse is the charcoal/propane debate.

I've been trying to stay off the internets a bit this weekend and spend the time with my family since we're all home so I haven't really been keeping an eye on the forum beyond my gig thread.
 
It wasn't offensive, and by no means did anyone say anything offensive.....but you could see it coming, for sure.

I thought it was handled in quite a reasonable, adult fashion.

And that should be taken as a testament to the good folks on here.

I only saw the first few posts of the thread, but - for me - the problem it dealt with kind of a "if you've got a problem with it, then that's your own fucking problem" kind of problem rather than a "let's walk on eggshells around bigots" kind of problem.

If I missed something tangential, then that's another story.
 
The thread hadn't derailed when I locked it, but I could see it going that way. In the past, threads like this tend to fill my PM box with messages off people angry about the content, angry about the thread violating policies, and the like. I doubt anyone here would intentionally say something intended to be hateful, but everyone's perspective on issues like civil rights, politics, and religion are probably different, and I was honestly more worried about the jokes being taken as hurtful than anyone trying to be mean. I just made a judgment call based on past experience with things like this.

Please don't take my decision to delete the thread as an indication that anyone did anything wrong, or that I favor one side of these debates over the other, or that my own feelings impact my choice to lock a thread. I try very hard to NOT put my own opinions in choices like this. If anyone wants to know my opinion, I'm happy to discuss it via pm. I hate the role of being a censor of content, but the original thread had a bunch of 'hot button' issues that have shredded places like HC in the past.

I actually made a few inflamatory comments in my reply to the original post. Not something I'd say belongs here. I enjoy the casual laid back atmosphere here. In fact I've been here more than HC lately. HC has become a place of "agree with me or your wrong" threads. Here we at least can speak our minds and nobody gets into the angry I hate you replies. I apologize for bringing a bit of typed and posted without considering other's to this fine forum.






and yes, definitely charcoal. :grin:
 
well.....i go both ways.......ummm......i mean with charcoal vs. propane.

charcoal is better for flavor.....but propane is fast and easy.

however.....the REAL bottom line here is......HARDWOOD fires. a REAL campfire makes the best flavor.
 
People actually PM with thread complaints? :rolleyes:
I bet they use mesquite wood in their grills (a known carcinogen)!
 
We grill with propane but I use Hickory and charcoal in the smoker.

And when a post is reported the moderators and admins get message about it.
