I would be interested to know how much of the songs are her, and how much are her co-writers. Not doubting her writing - when you work regularly with the cream of the crop as far as pop writing/producing for years some of it is bound to rub off on you. But she always works with established elite writers, and part of me wonders how much of her more recent success is due to them and massive marketing rather than Taylor herself.

Well, she’s a 30-something pro with a number of cowrites under pseudonyms on other people’s stuff. And she’s mostly worked with that dude from the National and/or Jack Antonoff on the last two albums. There’s a pretty clear Taylor Swift-ian approach to songwriting over the course of her records and she’s collaborated with a number of different people but her general approach remains pretty consistent. It’s not like her tracks have 7 writers on them.

Taylor has like 15 years of incredible success. You have to hand it any artist who crosses over a decade in the industry.

She also has her own signature as singer, writer, and voice in music. Which goes against the grain of a lot of other trends. And there is reason to believe she will have influence and name recognition in the long run. Which is only ever true for like maybe a fraction of the artists every generation.

Add on top of that she is critically acclaimed, too. Pop music is like major motion pictures. Some of them have huge marketing budgets and maybe enough stupid or very young fans to recoup their costs. But only some of them are going to get like a critical consensus that they are substantial works.

If you want a pretty good contrast, look at Katy Perry. She really doesn't have her own distinct voice or consistent output. It's just kind of vulturing the latest sounds written by Swedish guys who use the same trap beats and synth swells. Critics are very meh on her for the most part. Obviously she gets marketing budgets, but has failed to really produce a commercial comeback from 2013's Prism. And hasn't had any cult success really either like some other pop girls. Even while supposedly playing by the rules.

RATM is kind of meat and potatoes rock.

Mary J. Blige is the same category with with a lot of the black R&B artists they've added since the eighties.

Kate Bush was discovered by David Gilmour who is in the rock hall of fame with one of the bands...

Ronnie didn’t fuck. Minimal rocking and zero rolling.
They should let him in for having four hall of fame worthy records with three different bands. Unheard of. They were All true trail blazing efforts at the time of their release. He's influenced many of the bands you hate today.

He certainly was compared to his Sabbath colleagues.
He was born in Portsmouth New Hampshire and grew up in Courtland NY...not really souther in the sense of the song....geographically speaking he was only slightly more southern than his Sabbath band members

Pretty deserving list.

Every year without fail the 'Rock n' Roll' descriptor seems to throw people off. The only band on that list who are 'rock n' roll' are the New York Dolls.

Maiden doesn't swing so you can't really say they're straight-up rock n' roll, but I think there's an ethos around how Maiden have managed their entire career that fits squarely in the rock n' roll box. I mean, I don't remember too many Iron Maiden tours festooned with Bud Lite sponsorship.
