Have you played a Matamp GT40?

This week I finally got an Orange amp that’s much more powerful than I need. And of course now I’m gassing for a Matamp. I’m torn between a basic Minimat (there is one going cheap on Reverb) or getting one built. Obviously I don’t need one of the firebreathing monster models. So I’m looking at the GT40. But there are only three videos of the GT40 and none of them is especially good. Does anyone know what these things sound like? I’d like something that sounds like the big boys without breaking windows. But I don’t want to get one and find out it doesn’t sound anything like other Matamps the way the GT20 did.

I’ve never played a Matamp.

In my limited experience, even when a smaller wattage amp sounds good, it never feels the same as the bigger iron amps. I think the best of both worlds is a proper wattage amp with a really good master volume. Or, run big iron through something like a Fryette Power Station which attenuates with reactive load and then re-amplifies the signal.

I’m fortunate to own 2 amps with really good master volume. Also, I got a used Fryette PS-2 for cheap at GC online years ago. Even a 100 watt amp is practical at reasonable volume with a Power Station.

I think @ColourofFire had ( still has?) a Matamp. Not sure which model, I think one of the big ones though?
Yeah I have a GT1 with a built in attenuator. It was a custom build that I bought 2nd hand. I love it to bits, really haven't had any amp-GAS since I've bought it nearly 15-ish years ago now. Even though it sounds great on low volume, and with the attenuator you can get that proper Matamp sound without tearing down the building, of course it really shines when you can open it up a bit.

I have no idea about the GT40, but just send Matamp a message. They used to be very communicative, I've asked them a fair bit about the amp I got back when I bought it.

They've also got a GT1 that is switchable between 50 and 100 watts, which might be an option, that one definitely has the classic Matamp sound.

Now that I’ve thought about it I want a Green Series 3000. Matamp says it’s got the GT120 sound without the volume. I could run it through an attenuator with a Hizumitas and nail Wata’s tone. I’m going to hold off a few weeks before I click the order button in case this is just passing gas.

Just send them a message, since most of their stuff is built-to-order anyway, they might be able to put in a built in attenuator like mine has for not too much :)

I was thinking about having them add an attenuator. I would need to buy a nice attenuator anyway; one does not pay a premium for a hand built British amp and connect it to a Bugera Powersoak purchase as a Stupid Deal.
