Dig it! Helen Mirren in 1967

Let me warn any of you that might rent "The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and Her Lover" that while the quite lovely Ms Mirren does get naked in it, it is a pretty bizarre movie. Spousal acceptance factor will be low, and you'll most likely be banned from picking movies for a while.

Excaliber, on the other hand, is one of those epic movies that no one has ever heard of. I can't recommend it enough. Unfortunately, while Ms Mirren does show some skin, it is not all that sexy.

Excalibur is probably my favorite non-comedy ever. An amazing movie with a ridiculous cast and Mirren is, of course, excellent.

I think depends upon your age and access to cable. When I was between 9-11 years old it came on HBO for the first time and EVERY male (at least) I knew watched it, including all my friends, their older brothers, fathers, the older kids I didn't know, etc.

That said, I loved it and it is the movie I've seen most in my life, but...the acting was WAY over the top. Like bad Shakespearean stuff. And that's knowing that Shakespearean acting can seem over the top to those unfamiliar with the style. I don't think it's a coincidence that a lot of the actors didn't have much of a career following this movie. The story cannot fail despite that and the visuals (though too silk screened) were stunning and awesome and stood out in an age where Star Wars, Close Encounters, and other Sci-Fi were dominating the market.
