HNUAD - Fender Excelsior

The Chinese Preamp tubes have been replaced for Tung Sol 12AX7's and the amp will take its first test run tonight at CrossCut's rehearsal. The output tubes are still the stock Chinese 6V6's and those too will get changed eventually - looking at schematic for biasing. Also replaced the amp with nice big rubber feet for extra shock cushion. Need to order a 500K pot to add the tone mod as I am not digging the bright/deep tone switch - needs to be in the middle somewhere.

I almost gave one if those a spin at GC the other day. I decided against it since I just ordered that Ampeg. My wife would kill me if I came home with another amp.

I am already dead :embarrassed:

Thank goodness I keep playing and performing otherwise instead of a burial, I would have been cremated.

And in the good news, I used the amp in last nights blues rehearsal and it really sounded great. It plays well with my blues pedal board and the amp is quite loud. What I did find interesting is the lack of bottom end even with a 15" speaker but that also could be due to the open back cab - and I mean open back. There are no back boards on the this amp to help keep the speaker tight and restrict some of the cone movement. Outside of that, it really does sound great. Think of a 12" speaker in a partially open back cab.

You replace that switch with a pot yet?

No but the tubes were replaced and the amp used in a rehearsal. Planning to use it on Nov 23 with the Petty tribute. Considering the sound at the rehearsal the pot change will happen but not as soon as I wanted as I don't have the part hanging around. It will get ordered when I place another order for parts - the list is building. No urgency though as I can still use it with my rig as is. It will get changed out though sometime soon.

Typical of trade ins at places like GC. The hold is usually a month on anything. They have to report the item to make sure that it isn't stolen property with authorities which us the reason for the wait.
Yup...you'd think they'd do that BEFORE selling the item, though...it'd be a trifle more honest.

One of my guitar students bought a Boss pedal, had to wait for a few weeks to bring it home, found the same pedal somewhere else about $30 cheaper, (but had to pass, as her $$$ was tied up w/ GC), went to pick it up when she was told to, drove 44 miles to the GC, and was told when she arrived it it had been confiscated a few days earlier by the PD. Took a lot of hassle for nothing, and by the time she got to the other store where the cheaper pedal was, it had sold.

Alot of it has to do with when the item is traded in. Rather than keep in the back or in storage during the process, they put it on the floor so customers can snag it up. While it may be a hassle as a consumer, the store would probably have it in the back purchased or on layaway with a customer to have it sit collecting dust. That is 30 days in storage before being introduced to the world vs. sold.

As for your student, major bummer. She will find another pedal though - mojo to her.
