I thought that this might make a great thread because many of you came to MWGL in different ways and avenues.
Also it is kind of my way of thanking @Mark Wein for making this a great place and forum for me since I joined in 2010. Proud to be friend of Mark that I know personally!
So let me start!
I first learned of Mark through his ads in Craiglist. Premier advertised classes for rock and blues instruction and at the end of 2009, I signed Jr up for the rock class. Since my son was playing in the High School jazz band, his exposure to musicians were only through me (my gigs) and the students he met in school.
Attending Premier was a good way for him to interact with new players and find out what it was like to be in class outside of school and what is really out there in the world.
So I asked Jr and he said: "Yeah, I want to take a class." Gave Premier a call and signed him up for the rock class. Sadly the class folded as attendees who committed and paid, didn't show at the second meeting. With that Mark folded the class and I let Jr finish with Mark privately. Jr needed more seasoning in basics anyway so it was a win/win situation. Mark told me of a new blues class that was about to start and Jr said that he wanted to take it. When the class began, Jr enjoyed it alot although he still had trouble but that is okay. He had trouble with the concepts that some of the new players at even the blues jams cannot understand so this really was a great primer for what was to come. After two classes on guitar on guitar with Mark, he took a third class but this time with Tommy Harkenrider.
So while the story is about Jr, it is how I met Mark. I have had great conversations with him in person and found that we also had musician friends in common. As for the forum, during Jrs' first class Mark mentioned to his students that he had a forum for communication on what was happening in the class. Besides class communications, it was also a forum for people who share the common interest in music.
And that is how I met all of you online crazy bastards!
I also have been lucky to met many in person as well - all great people! Once again, thank you Mark!!!
