How Long Have You Been Playing?

...I got my first guitar at Christmas, 1999...but I played my grandfathers acoustic (guild maderia) and his electric (1959 Gibson ES-330T) since I was about 11...I already could play Em-Am-B7 when I got my first guitar...didnt get proper lessons until college, when I was studying jazz...

2.5 decades, give or take.
there were a couple patches in there where I didn't have an instrument though.
or a home.
which explains the lack of instrument, I guess.

took maybe 5 lessons as a teen.
then figured I'd give it a go on my own.
never looked back.

can't read music, don't "practice" guitar, per se...

as long as I can get out what I have in my head, it's good.:)
after all, those voices may not be real, but they've got some really fuckin' good ideas.

30+ years? I don't know, really. I knew my way around the basics on guitar and keyboard from a very early age, played in a few kid bands, but didn't take up a serious study of music and technique until I was in my late teens.

also, I very often played in bands with folks that were a lot better than me, learning that way.
and being forced to play stuff that was, at the time, very hard for me.

Just did that. It was fun, a good challenge, and helped a lot. After doing it, I went back to some old songs I hadn't played in a while, and was surprised at how much stonger/more confident my hands were.

I first picked up a guitar when I was 11..but didn't really get into it till I was 14. So, a lot of years

Once you've reached a certain level in your playing, that's the best way to get better imo. :)

man, this one cat I played with from 87-89 or so, that dude used to bust my balls hardcore.
guy had some serious skills.

wonder what ever became of him...

I still play stuff that we wrote togther.
not in the band or anything, but just noodling around at home.
would you believe there's still one riff from back then that gives me trouble?
sad...:embarrassed:

I bought my first guitars in '82. A takamine 12-string acoustic and a Les Paul clone. Later, an Ibanez pointy. Played them for just 4 or 5 years and took up keyboards for several years, followed by bass.
Came full circle and started playing guitar seriously about 2 1/2 years ago.

//My Dad is in town and got to listen to me play yesterday for the first time. He was happy to see my enjoyment. Music has always been a big part of his life.

Talking age, when I was 27 I played with Smokey, a 62 year old Mohawk native, with a '57 Les Paul.
We gigged steady, every week, and he broke me into the business more than anyone else.
