I can't believe how much time I wasted chasing gear....

Blacktop Strat+Boss GT-8+Peavey Classic 30=all I need for gigging.

I am happy what I have, but am looking at "downsizing" my amp. Not because I absolutely need to have a different tone, but to have less money tied up in that amp. Other than still being interested in an inexpensive offset like a J.Mascis, and a pedal or two once in a while, I really don't think I need anything different from what I have.

I was nervous about letting go of yet another amazing sounding Orange Rockerverb head, but I was pretty fed up with the size and weight of that head and cabinet. The Mesa Rectoverb 25 is half the weight, half the size, and sounds great. I'm actually playing electric more because of that, despite how great the Orange sounded.

I guess this thread should be called "Whatever Works... Shut up and Play Guitar". :baimun:

I kept chasing tone until I finally (25 amps later) figured out the the EL84 Vox tone was what I was after. It suits my playing perfectly. The Gretsch Playboy amp I had (and was forced to sell) sold me on that finally. The AC15 I have now set that in concrete. Not that I would turn down a Matchless.

One of the benefits of being an awful guitar player - I know my current equipment is light years beyond my ability, so chasing more gear is pointless.

If that Rectoverb sounds as good as that Orange did, I may have to get one.

In the last decade the only stuff I've bought are instruments that offer a specific/unique thing and practice amp as my Blues Devill 212 can't be turn up past 0.5.

So that's a:
- Mustang Amp
- La Patrie Concert CW
- Morgan Monroe MMV-12-CEB Mini 12-String
- Godin A5 A/E bass (fretted)

I lust after a fair share of other instruments/gear, but I can and do easily dismiss acquiring anything that is a variation on anything I already own. The sad part is that I still don't spend enough playing let alone practicing, but I have a cool palette to choose from when I do get to play.

I went though several years of buying stuff just because it was fun to have new and different toys.

I'm at the point now that I really should get rid of about 80% of the stuff that I have.

Interesting thread...

I have never sought the perfect guitar or perfect amp.

I always sought the sound in my head that I wanted to replicate. My gear purchases go towards achieving those goals because personally, I have not found a system that will do it all. Sorry folks, modeling does not do it. Covers a lot of ground but not what need it to do.

Speaking of gear - crazy as it may seem, but I do have a lot of pedals and 6 different pedalboards - but that is my choice. My acoustic board is not the same as my blues board, GP board, Country board, Foghat board and Campbell board. When you play multiple styles or genres in music, it is just that way - well for me. Same goes for guitars. I cannot make a Gibson Les Paul with Humbuckers sound like a Strat or vice versa. The nay sayers will bring in the modded strat concept which I used much through my early years - it ain't the same. The feel of the guitar, the personality, the sound, yada, yada, yada. How 'bout making a Gretsch sound like a Tele, or a Flying V sound like a Rickenbacker, it just doesn't work. Apply the same concept to amps and it gets crazy but a fact is a fact.

I think one of the reasons that I have accumulated so many guitars, amps, and pedals is that I was searching for my tone. I am currently refining what I need to keep, and what I can let go. I may always keep certain things in order to have a range of sounds available, or I may decide how best to use few things to get what I want. The process that I have gone through has allowed me to better understand how to get what I want, and I don't regret the journey one bit.
