Question: just curious, how many folks here have NEVER taken a guitar in for a set-up?

I work about 50 hours a week on my day job,and play put most weekends. I dont really have the time to fool with it,and it's NICE not to have to. I have a guy on my route who does all of the repairs and set ups for the mom and pop stores, and is very well respected in my area. I like his work, and he is pretty quick getting it back. one less thing to worry with!

I used to take everything in. Now I do most of my own work on the non-SUhr guitars. I'll probably send my SUhrs back to the factory for a big do-over later in the year though.

for a simple set up I went to you tube and learned how to do it on my telecaster. found it enjoyable to learn and do. I bought the few tools necessary and with time and patience I did it or a least I think I did right. I actually found it fun to do.

...I subscribe to the following philosophy: Why pay for something you can do yourself?...A basic set up is easy. All you need is an allen wrench or two, and maybe a tuner...boom...

there's half the rub
it's it is NOT a serious thing, in can be FUN
learn it!
I've given a few fret jobs in my day!

I used to but one of the reasons for buying the purple Strat you can see in my avatar was to learn how to do things such as setups and upgrades myself on a guitar that I wouldn't be upset about if I irrevocably screwed up. Floyd Rose setups I haven't gone through yet but that's another project I am planning when I get time for it to replace the really shoddy single locking KMD trem on my first Korean SuperStrat with a no-name cheap and cheerful Floyd clone. I deliberately haven't got a decent Schaller or Gotoh unit as this is a learning exercise on a budget for the time being.

I've only taken a guitar in once for a setup, when I was digging myself into a hole, getting it right. Otherwise, I've always done them mysel. Ditto for the electronics.

Only took one for fretwork once. All other stuff I've done myself.
I have another that needs fretwork, so I've gotten with someone to do it in July sometime after the vacation expenses are caught up.

I've taken my Tele in for a set up + restring once, now it needs both again. Wanna do it myself, just need to watch some videos about how to not screw it up

You can't hurt it. Much easier than you have been lead to believe.
