You asked for it...I wanna know the tractor joke
There once was a man who loved tractors, I mean he absolutely LOVED them. He had tractor models, tractor wallpaper, remote control miniature tractors, tractor board games, even some tractor porn(which is not easy to find mind you). The only thing that even came close to his love for tractors, was the love he felt for his wife. His high school sweetheart, who didn't mind his infatuation with tractors one bit. She didn't even mind the role play where she would dress as a tractor, he would dress as a farmer, and he would take her for a "ride". Sadly his wife was struck one day, a tractor fell off the back of a transport truck. She didn't die until he was at her side in the hospital. Her dying words "don't blame the tractor honey" and with that she headed to the big farm in the sky. Sadly, he did blame the tractor, he hated them now with all his mind, body, and soul. He went home and destroyed ALL his tractor related items, the toys, his wifes tractor suit, and even his collection of tractor porn. He put it all in a pile and burned it in the yard. What ever didn't burn enough to his liking was thrown into a woodchipper. He then went inside, rarely leaving his home, for 8 years. Finally on the 8th anniversary of his darling wifes death he decided it was time to get back out in the dating world, plus the cute cashier at the grocery store had been asking him out for a while now, he called her out to dinner. The restaurant he choose ended up being quite nice, good food, good service, great decor. But there was one problem, it was EXTREMELY smoky. So smoky that his date, being an asthmatic, was having some trouble breathing. After noticing her displeasure, and trouble breathing, he started breathing in. I mean REALLY breathing in. Inhaling with such force that all the smoke quickly left the dining room, and went into his lungs. When the room was void of smoke he stepped outside and released it all into the night. When he rejoined his date she asked "how on earth did you do that?" to which he replied, "I'm an extractor fan."
Different version...same result...
Yeah. He went easy on them. Mine would have been a lot longer. In fact, I may have written this up once before. Hold on a minute...
At the end of the day, it's about what makes the songs better. I like working on fingerstyle because it makes me a better guitarist and bassist. Everything I've ever written fingerstyle for guitar ends up getting either flatpicked or hybrid picked anyway. All I'm looking for is to be more comfortable as a bassist, and much of can be attained learning to play fingerstyle. Even if everything gets flatpicked in performance, like on guitar, it'll change how I approach the bass, which is what I'm really looking for.
Congrats on the gig...break a leg, brother...About a month later and I'm hearing how good my picking technique is, but how the tone I want is all fingers. There's just so far EQ will get you. We'll be hammering away at our set at two rehearsals this week in preparation for our first gig next weekend. It's at a backyard bbq and there's no pressure at all. I've done a little work on fingers to this point, primarily working on the rest stroke. One thing I've noticed from watching some YouTube videos is that my stubby fingers move a lot more than the tall guys who gravitate to bass. So I'm working on quieting down my technique. But it'll be all pick this week and my fingerstyle conversion will begin in earnest next week. It may be accompanied by some flats. I've had the same LaBella rounds on my bass for 5 years. Could be time for change.
Congrats on the gig...break a leg, brother...

My fingerstyle technique is coming together. I'm not good, but I'm getting comfortable, and that's huge. It's surprising to me what's allowed me to get comfortable with fingerstyle, and it's not anything I thought it would be.
A few months before we moved, @jelloman moved the strap pin on my bass from behind the neck to the upper bout. That helped a little. When I got into this band nearly a year later, I bought a leather strap with suede backing. That helped significantly, especially when i started putting it on the side of the horn instead of over or behind it. There's still a little head heaviness. But it's much more comfortable than it was. My hands are in the right positions and that's what's allowed me to begin to develop right hand technique.
IMO, if you don't feel comfortable on an instrument, you should probably play something else. But it's worth exploring the possibilities on the ones that sound and feel right. Sometimes, it's just the right strap/positioning.
Also, I've settled on floating thumb technique. I know, it's probably ridiculous on a short scale four string. But it's what's comfortable to me so fuck off.![]()
