So...Ryan Adams...

I'm honestly not sure how depraived this is, nevermind what "seriously outside" entails.

Your mainline Evangelical thing is a kind of culturally conservative, personal relationship with the Lord, wholesome lifestyle mishmash of feels-based individualist po-mo Christianity. It’s not the greatest situation for we followers of the Dark Lord, but it’s also a little hysterical to act like this kind of Buddy Christ/WWJD worldview is the worst thing. It’s certainly part of mainstream American culture. And if we can put up with Florida Georgia Line and Jimmy Kimmel, I suppose we can live with ENGORGED IN THE LORD — A Christian Lifestyle Community.

IHOP, from what I know, was centered on a specific charismatic dude who preached that a hard line had to be drawn because THE END TIMES WERE COMING and IHOP kids needed to get out there as ill-prepared missionaries and save the savages.

All this is in comparison to say, mainline Protestant traditions, which are—for better or worse—the default US Christian experience. These congregations tend to be somewhat rule/doctrine bound and traditional—in both good and bad ways. A lot of mainline Protestant denominations are increasingly all up in inclusivity, low grade social and economic justice, and progressive-type dogoodery.

Ok, so fuck minorities and any kind of social programs that might help the disadvantaged and actually stop mass rioting by the poor. Got it.

That’s probably a little too uncharitable. In general, standard issue Evangelicals love the feels generated by RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS for the poor and demonstrations of being all one in the body of Christ. I mean, as long as we don’t have to live in the same neighborhood.

And stopping mass riots by the poor is exactly the sort of bourgeois concerns shared by megachurch Evangelicals, selfish yuppies, and craven politicians. In fact, how much of any social safety net is only there to ensure that property crimes don’t experience a rapid uptick?

Sure, random acts of kindness to people they want, not people they don't. That's not how charity works.

The entire safety net, as full of holes as it is, is designed to do just enough to keep the poor from rioting. And it's why we're fucked in this country. We need a much more robust net. And probably a bunch of them too.

I’m not saying that random acts of kindness aren’t dimwitted and pointless, but I’m guessing I spend more time in the places where one encounters the standard Evangelical worldview than you do. I mean, have you ever had a drunk bro literally cry on your shoulder because he wanted to be a better Xtian but he liked metal too much? Lots of these folks aren’t evil, they’re just not on top of pressing social justice issues. But they also aren’t following cult leaders preaching the actual imminent end of the actual world either.

No, I spend my time teaching a 4 year old to not be a miserable fuck.

Yes, because you don’t have 15+ years evidence of me being a miserable fuck from NYC.

Well, my other response was gonna be “Good luck with that. #farfromthetree”

Anyway, a lot of Evangelical flyoverstaters are more personally inclusive than you might think. But then the macro level is a hot mess. And then you’ve got your Village Liberal types in podunk conservative Christian territory who have to make a big edgycute deal out of everything. It’s more complicated in reality than in the politics thread.

But still there’s a long way from a “sins of omission” style of Evangelical church and a definitely not normal proto-cult environment.

I’m just trying to give you some context given that you’re a GODLESS BI-COASTAL ELITE.

Evangelicals can be pretty alright people as long as they can live in a vacuum with people who look and think and learn and laugh and act and fuck and breed and die like them.

Indeed. There’ve been some indie world assholes who’ve been “cancelled” for shit like this, but I can only imagine the pile of garbage that hasn’t yet been uncovered.

Once upon a time I collaborated with a woman who was starting her own rock mag—she definitively didn’t want to do a zine but an honest-to-god glossy. She wasn’t always the brightest and she was frequently a terrible person, but, yeah, she took a lot of shit and situations would escalate quickly. Of course, she wasn’t super safety conscious about meeting musicians alone in hotel rooms and shit.

And having been in bands with youngish, attractiveish women...yeah...indie dudes are scum. Musicians. Promoters. Writers/gatekeepers. Engineers. Yep. Being a white hetero dude means your get to live in a lovely fantasyland where everything is wonderful. And then you see things through the They Live glasses of female bandmates or queer bandmates and...wowza...
