Star Trek > Star Wars

Star Wars is made-up space fantasy that doesn't bother explaining its violations of the laws of physics.

(Except for Midichloreans and that was just too stupid to count.)

Star Trek is made-up space fantasy with ridiculous explanations of its violations of the laws of physics. Fame-seeking physicists then spend time trying to make the ridiculous explanations seem plausible.

Bottom line: Both are fiction.

Not being a physicist, I focus more on the organizations and group behaviors portrayed in the movies. Let's just say I wouldn't much want to live in a universe controlled by the Empire, the Rebellion, or The Federation.

Star Trek and Star Wars are two different ends of the Space spectrum and therefore your tastes will likely lean one direction or the other.

Star Trek is more cerebral and looking into the philosophy of different interstellar races and communities interacting. Some of the TV episodes would culminate in nothing more than Kirk standing on the bridge and debating with another leader on the screen.

Star Wars is more visceral and about the adventure. This is one of the reasons that the prequels were not as well received when they added all the politics and tried to logically over-explain everything. Star Wars worlds are supposed to be a zodiac of color and themes, and clash together like a big screen equivalent of the Saturday popcorn serials of old.

One could also include the "Starwars-isation" of JJ's Star Trek movie... adding a splash of Star Wars mix to the Star Trek cocktail. Obviously the writer of the article is an academic who's overthinking the issue ........and was probably a virgin until he was 35. :helper:

This about hits the nail on the head. Star Trek is sci-fi with facsimiles of politics and naval warfare, Star Wars is western/samurai/Arthurian/Wagnerian with spaceships and aliens, and Abrams's Star Trek is more the latter than the former.

I'm also in the "enjoy both" set, provided that we can pretend that the prequels never happened.
 
I love both, but if I could only have one I'd chose Star Trek. I've been re-watching The Next Generation on netflix. Great, shows it's age a little but overall is an intelligent program. I enjoy the moral dilemmas on the show and the more sophisticated themes. I do love Star Wars, but it's more of a popcorn escapism type of thing for me.
 
I enjoy both but story wise I prefer Star Trek. The theme of Star Wars is great but some of the story's got real cheezy in a few epi's.
 
I'd say the original Star Wars Trilogy dominates, but for the last watching I did of a New Hope left me less than moved. And as others have mentioned, between the trilogies the Next Generation show and then its movies were quite good and brought a higher level of everything to the Star Trek world. The newest Trek was actually quite good and I'm very much interested in the next film. I am, however, already more interested in the next Star Wars trilogy.

So no, ST is in fact not "greater than" SW regardless of financial analysis.:thu:
 
I love them both. I grew up watching every incarnation of Star Trek. I'll say that the last Star Trek movie was much better than the last 3 Star Wars movies. The original trilogy was awesome but it just doesn't seem as epic to me now as it did when I was a kid.

My future stepdaughter Hailey who is 12, loves the original Star Trek and it gives us something in common. Right now she is building a model of the original Enterprise bridge. I asked her which one she likes better and she prefers Star Trek. She said it's more intellectual and has more depth.
 
I never have really watched any of the Star Treks. I occasionally watched the original reruns back in the 70s as a kid. Star Wars was probably the coolest thing when I was a kid. I did catch the last Star Trek film and it was pretty good.
 
totally agree. i never understood why nerds, aka smart people enjoy star wars when its based on the fantasy of a C student.
 
I understand that people compare them because they are the two big, popular space franchises, but I don't think they are all that comparable.

I'll also go on record as saying I like both, but again, aside from the fact they take place outside of earth and aliens are involved, there isn't a whole lot of similarities to compare the two.
