Eh, people are going to always compare the two franchises, but they couldn't be any more different, as you and others in this thread have pointed out as well. Blockbuster films and lackluster shows vs. blockbuster shows and lackluster films are at the core of their popularity, but both have hundreds, if not thousands of books inside each respective universe, the fans of both created more content and depth than either original scheme ever intended. They are both very cool, but the argument of which is better is kinda pointless.

Thinking some more - Kirk & Picard would totally own Skywalker & Solo in any kind of real life scenario.

BTW, I always wanted to hear a band do an acapella cover of the Star Trek TOS theme song. The lead singer would of course do the Woo woo, woo woo woo-woo woos, because that part is technically demanding. Background singers cover the orchestral fills, and the guys that can't sing like me would provide the WHOOOSH each time the Enterprise flies by.

I agree with this. I love the epic themes of Star Wars but much prefer the execution on the first three films. I did like certain characters in the last three though, and liked that Obi Wan, with his sacrifice and humble behavior ends up being the biggest hero IMO.

The original Trek shows had horrible effects, were sometimes overacted, (shatner) but were still great with the a Sci fi exploratory naval with ethics issues themes. Generation seemed too PC to me at the time, but I still liked it. Of course Khan and a few of the movies were good. And I REALLY liked this last movie and have high hopes for the new one. With Abrams it as if they took the best story and thematic elements of the original series and did it better due to the tech and budget available now.

The original Star Trek series seemed more visceral and human to me due largely to Shatner's Kirk. Much as he bugged me sometimes, he injected some swashbuckler into the program. Jean Luc seemed a eunuch by comparison to me. Somehow, it seemed too PC. I understand some of the later Next Generation stuff got better, but i had lost interest by that time. I will give those shows another try on Netflix. Was looking for something to watch with my boys anyway.

Though Star Wars did have that old time serial feel to it, it also had some grand themes. It resonated with me, especially as an 8th grader seeing the first movie for the first time. This kid from the suburbs of Tacoma related to Luke wanting to get off his desert planet and see some adventure.

how so? gene rodenberry fought hard to keep religion out of it. he figured, and rightly so, that it would be absurb if christianity was the dominant religion of the universe.
 
Perhaps they don't mean preachy as in religion, but rather that of the Federation, human collective nationalism in space, essential directives instilled on those who don't follow Federation regulation, etc? Not that all are human, shall we say specific race types combining to form a union that some other races do not agree with, yet having a consistent dedication to that Federation?

Both franchises have their high points and low.

Star Trek's original pitch by Roddenberry was "Wagon Train in Space." That was true...as far as it went. He used it as a euphemism for social commentary but used some very good stories to do so.
TNG was good.
The TV series went downhill after that.
Movies were a mixed bag. Some good, some not so good and one was just...I can't think about it.

Star Wars is the classic epic and hero's journey story.
Episode 4 was a great opening. 5 was the typical midsection story. Episode 6 was good but Lucas was beginning to get cheesy. Episodes 1-3 were a disaster.

Overall I've been a bigger fan of Trek but Wars is among my favorites too.
