The fates already f'ked me sideways
I decided to book a vacation. In May, I'm flying into Brussels. From there, I'll take a train to Aachen, Germany on the Belgium/Germany border for 3 nights. Then to Brussels for 4 nights. From there, Iceland for 3 nights. I was looking at web pages for Reykjavík when I found this museum: The Icelandic Phallological Museum. That's right. Reykjavik has a dick museum. This should be interesting.

Sounds like an awesome trip! Brussels is a great city, I used to go there quite a bit with my parents (it's only a 2h or so drive from my hometown). It doesn't really have any great highlights, but it's just a pleasant city. Last time I was there a few years ago many bars and cafes were still very much cash focused, so get some euros. It took me completely by surprise as I hadn't used or carried cash for years :embarrassed: And there's some restaurants in the centre that are pure tourist traps, as usual, avoid anything that has picture menus.

Aachen has a cool cathedral, it used to be Charlemagne's home base. If you have the time, there's the "drielandenpunt" (three countries point) not too far from the city, where the borders of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands meet.

I'm looking at Antwerp at the end of April for my anniversary. From there I can also visit Amsterdam, Brussels, Rotterdam and the Hague (MC Escher museum) relatively easily.

If you fly Iceland Air from the States they give you the option to schedule a long layover for days/weeks in Reykjavík instead of booking a separate flight from Brussels.

Just a tip.

Misread your post, seems you are doing Iceland on your way home and I thought you were going from Brussels and back again, but Iceland Air might save you some. And don't forget to give us the lowdown on Iceland.

If you're in those hoods, check out Gent as well, beautiful and friendly place. I really enjoyed it, it's kinda like Brugge but a less insane amount of tourists.

Since I usually have to change planes to get to the places I want to, I prefer Icelandair. It's usually pretty easy to change planes in Reykjavik. And I can pick up a bottle of unusual gin on the way home.

I've floated the long layover thing to my wife, but she doesn't have interest Iceland.

Thinking of separate vacations......

Agree with others that Brussels isn't worth more than a couple of days on its own but has easy access to Ghent, Bruges and Antwerp which are all worth a visit. You can also be in London in a couple of hours.
 
But if you go to St. Petersburg you can see Rasputin’s enormous schlong. Which might be a sea cucumber in a jar depending on who you believe.

How can someone NOT be interested in Iceland? It's the only place on earth with glaciers and volcanos!!! How can that NOT be fascinating? I'm going while I can. I suggest you do the same. You may need to contact a divorce attorney first.

I've been to London a few times. I really don't want to go back. I was thinking of taking a day trip from Aachen to Wuppertal just to see the monorail system. I'm not sure that it's worth it, even though I'm sure Wuppertal is quite nice. I'm not opposed to day trips to Ghent, Bruges, or Antwerp. Even Amsterdam isn't out of the question.
 
It sounds like you will definitely need a jacket.
My 3 year shorts wearing streak would end if I went.

I proposed inside a very wet cave in Iceland.

Wonderful place. Not sure if it's a possibility but I hired a car and did the golden triangle at a leisurely pace.

Id love to go back and hire a 4x4 so we could see the north of the island.

*The wet caves are on the opposite end from the Phallological Museum.
