What bands did your friends try to turn you on to but didn't take?

I think the probable with the Beatles is that too many fans act like they could do no wrong. My wife dislikes them passionately, but I know she likes some of their songs that she doesn't admit to.

Metallica and Megadeth. As someone who likes metal, I am supposed to like them. Sorry, I dislike both for different reasons.

I had a few mates who thought that since I was into guitars I'd probably appreciate some of their favorite metal bands as well. It didn't really work, with few exceptions. I actively dislike Metallica, but I think "The Call of Ktulu" is a great track. I don't really like Iron Maiden either, but I think Killers is a, yes, killer album, and I like Di'Anno's vocals and out of place punk attitude. I never really got grunge or post-grunge either. Years after their lost efforts I weirdly got into King Diamond/Mercyful Fate. King's vocal style is an acquired taste, I suppose, but I really dig a lot of his stuff.

Yep, I can't get on with Iron Maiden or Metallica (apart from maybe 'The Call of Ktulu' and 'Fade to Black'), but I LOVE Mercyful Fate/King Diamond. '"Abigail, I know you're in control of her brain, Abigail woh-oh-woh-ohhhh!"

Disco, specifically the Saturday Night Fever sound track. That’s really about it. Another friend had a much older brother with a huge record collection and he was always getting new stuff. I got to hear a bunch of stuff without buying it. It allowed me to create a good album collection without going through a bunch of stuff I hated.

It seemed the harder they tried the more I fought it.

A couple of close friends back in high school tried they're best to get me to like the Doors. It never took. Even today.
Not sorry. Just don't like them much. There are bunches of bands I don't like much.
I've had friends trying to get me into the Doors too. I guess that was shortly after the movie, and they probably thought that since I dug a lot of 60s stuff I'd dig them too. I don't hate them, I just don't get Morrison's lyrical universe. I can appreciate the fancy organ stuff, but to me the best thing about them is John Densmore's drumming. I really dig that light touch and jazzy feeling. Kinda reminds me of Danish rock/jazz legend Alex Riel:

There are a lot of bands/music posted here that didn't take with me either. But I can't think of anything that someone tried to convince me I should like that I didn't.

My mom had twin brothers. Each of them had four kids - one girl and three boys. All of my boy cousins on the one side are musical - two are professionals. None have ever played on the other side. Anyway - back on topic, the youngest cousin on the first side has an MFA from UC Berkeley, has perfect pitch and is one of the coolest guys I know. His main instrument is bass and when he's not doing symphonic music he's been in Sabbath tribute and other rock bands in various genres. Right now he's in a band called "HeadRush WestCoast" where he's the (I think non-singing) Geddy. Obviously, the guy is major into Rush but somehow it's never grabbed me as something I'd want to listen to for more than a song or possibly two. It sorta' sounds like Yes-Lite to me....

I was anti Beatles for years as an older teen early 20 something. My sister wouldn’t leave it alone. She kept burning me cds until I got it. The Beatles are awesome. I was an idiot.

It was my brother for me with the Beatles. Same situation otherwise but in the era of albums and cassette tapes. I like them now but I burned out.

This could explain why you listen to so much terrible music :poke:

Sometimes the best thing you can do for a friend is tell, them they are wrong.

ditto: Kiss and Rush. Kiss was a gimmick, bad musical theater for 12 yr olds.
I could tell Rush were at least talented musicians, I just didnt like their music.

Living the south I had a lot of friends into 38 Special, Blackfoot, etc. Those 2nd generation southern rock bands in the late 70s early 80s that were basically just aping Skynyrd. Later Skynyrd too, post plane crash. I liked Skynyrd despite there problematic uncool rebel flag waving redneck tendencies because at least they weren't trying to be something they were not and wrote some good songs.
Then the whole Hank Jr worship in the 80s turned my stomach. Always considered him a reactionary hack making money off Sr's name with lame songs he didnt even write and co-opting the whole outlaw country thing for a buck. He was a Kid Rock before Kid Rock. No wonder they get along so well.

I'll get murdered for some of these
Pretty much every disco track ever including the BeeGees ones, MJ, Prince, MTV era Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel, 90125 and later Yes, pretty much every Brit synth pop band, and every boy band ever conceived.

Veering off a little, you just reminded me of Asia. Friend hadn't heard them yet, he just heard the news they had formed and told me about it. We were both really excited to hear the "supergroup" then, very disappointed.

Zep, absolutely. Jones and Bonham a kickass rhythm section (and the real MVPs in that band). But never could stand Robert's wailing and never a big fan of Page (good riffs though).

Other than that...
Thin Lizzy (outside of 3 songs). But Black Rose and Emerald do kick several kinds of arse though.
The Who (same sort of deal here)
Talking Heads (seriously, I just don't get it for some reason)
Radiohead

The big one though is... Van Halen. Yeah, great guitar playing over very forgettable songs.
I actually prefer them with Sammy. Better musicianship, less "party rock" and way better vocals.

It really is an individual thing. Most songs from these bands do absolutely nothing for me on an emotional level.
The way I'm wired I think. If I can't feel anything at all listening to something, I just don't go back.
Sometimes a cool groove or a great riff might help, but I have to feel at least something.

Gotta agree on Van Halen. Was Eddie an innovator? Sure. Were the songs any good? Meh, sometimes ok. Best one was the Orbison cover.
David Lee Roth had that slap-worthy smirk faced grin that rubbed me the wrong way the first time I laid eyes on him.

I enjoyed Van Halen’s DLR-era hits. But most of those albums was just filler. Van Hagar was so boring that I can only remember a single song from those years.

I never really got into Metal. Sure, I listened to some proto metal as a teen, Sabbath, Deep Purple, etc but I liked other genres better. I’ve never listened to Iron Maiden, Megsdeath, Motörhead, etc. I was in my 20s-30s by then and just wrote it off as juvenile music for 13 yr old boys. I was trying to play like Tony Rice and Norman Blake, about as far away from that stuff as you can get. I bought the Metallica Black Album when it came out just to see what the deal was and honestly I don't think I made it thru the whole thing and gave the cd away asap.
Today’s down tuned extra bass strings chugga chugga monster voc thing doesn’t move me in any way and just seems kinda pointless.
