Looking for a new delay

I have DL4 somebody gave me years ago. I really only ever use the ducting delay or slapjack and it takes up a lot of real estate on my pedal board. I prefer simple things when it comes to pedals. The less knobs the better.

I’ve used an MXR carbon copy and liked it. Memory Toy also looks enticing. Any suggestions?

I've got the El Capistan, a SourceAudio Nemesis, and a Boss DD-20 GigaDelay.

The first 2 do terrific things, but I always seem to gravitate back to the Boss for unfussy delay.

But I really do have to explore all the possibilities in the El Cap and Nemesis.

My favorite delay is the Strymon El Capistan. I think @smurfco likes his, too.

I can really appreciate that one of the knobs is wow.

I had a Roland space echo on loan years ago. That was neat. I’m guessing this is a faithful reproduction of that type of thing with out all the fuss?

I think so. It’s a tape delay-type which is my favorite. And the sound on this pedal is much better than the tape delay on my Timeline.

Oh yeah, that 4th knob that sets the delay range so you get better control with the time knob is just a bridge too far.

In that case, since you've already had one, I suggest another Carbon Copy. The switch on the DM-2w also changes the delay range so that one is clearly out.

lol

Do you have any experience with the Styrom Weiner mentioned? The price tag of the boss is super appealing. Is it worth another 200 bucks?

I don’t really do the buy and sell pedal thing a lot of people seem to get off on. I don’t mind spending more money one time to be done with it.

I don't have direct experience. Smurfco had one when I played with him and it sounded great. But if you're looking for simple, that's the wrong pedal.

Word. Do you know how hard is it to dial in a good sound and is it noticeably better than the more affordable options?

It's easy to dial in a good sound. "Better" depends on what you want from a delay pedal. If you want a Space Echo emulator with tap tempo and self oscillation, it's fantastic. If you want a simple delay, look elsewhere.

Pardon the ignorance but what do you mean by self oscillation? And can it do a simple slap back type thing?

Every delay does simple slapback. If it doesn't, it's not a very good delay. So yes, the Strymon does slap back.

Self oscillation happens when you turn up the feedback on a delay so it starts delaying itself, making spaceship noises. Some delays you don't even need to plug in to get them to self oscillate.

Ohh geez... that sounds fun.

I did a couple of sets sitting in with a band who were real into effects and what not. They plugged my guitar into some body else’s pedal board with that person twisting the knobs. It was super weird but a hell of a lot of fun.

My delay setup is an Ibanez DE7 > Catalinbread Echorec, which are both digital emulations of analog delays. The Echorec is my main delay. I use 2 or 3 taps depending on what I'm going for. It can self oscillate, but I don't want that all the time either. It's got some nice modulation too. Since the Echorec is more niche, I use the DE7 when I want slapback, self oscillation, and a drier or more digital delay. I could probably replace them both with an El Capistan, but I don't see a reason to either.

watching videos... I think you may be right. It sounds awesome but it’s intimidating for me. I love the idea of being able to do all that wacky stuff, but it’d be like learning a whole new instrument. I don’t know that I should justify the expense for something that may or may not get utilized.

I would go more by how it sounds compared to the other pedals you're considering than the features.

For simple good sounding delay you can’t beat a carbon copy imo. Though I think it is worth the learning curve to get the El Cap. It’s hard to get a bad sound out of it.
