99% of the time, any talk of crime is from 'Chicagoans' who actually live in the burbs and are frightened by people with skin that's darker than theirs. That said, I hadn't taken the L since covid started, and I have heard that there's been an uptick in crime on and around the train. I'm guessing the same general rules apply now that did back when I was a semi-regular red line rider - don't engage with the crazy/drunk/etc, don't fall asleep or get too engaged with your book/phone, look before you sit, etc. (standard 'big city's rules for anywhere, really - situational awareness yadda yadda)
If you can avoid particularly bad stations and late night that's good too
