F*CKF*CKF*CKF*CK... Tom Petty in critical conditon after cardiac arrest

Jesus Christ! I was just thinking this weekend about how many rock legends have gone, and thinking that Petty would at least be around for a while.

How awful. I think he was an incredible talent and one of the all time greats.

Unreal. I wasn't a mega fan, but had massive respect and appreciation and truly loved many of his songs. A true giant. An absolute icon and one of a kind. His music defied genrefication, he did what he did and he did it his way.

RIP Mr. Petty. You left us far too soon.

Our band covered three of his songs - all of which I sang. The man had soooo many high quality songs and that spanned from his first release to his last.

The easy way to know is to ask whether he'll still be part of the cultural fabric decades from now and I think the answer is almost certainly yes.

I think it is impossible to imagine him NOT being part of the cultural fabric forever. Shit, I hear his music pretty much as often in Switzerland as I did in the US. English isn't even an official language here, and the few English speaking artists you hear on the local radio are icons like Dylan, The Beatles, The Stones, Pink Floyd, Bowie, etc....and Tom Petty.

Shit. I'm reading a petty biography just now and went on a spotify kick last week - my dad played the Into The Great Wide Open lp to death when it came out and even though I'd not heard most of the tunes for 25+ years I could remember just about all of the tunes inside out - thats the mark of a great writer.

This. I'm thinking of all the great hits and I know every lick and every line. I think that IS the legacy of a great songwriter.
