Formula 1 2024

so, lemme see if i have this right.
andretti wants to add a team to F1, but he's saying that at least at first, he's going to use the same engine/trans as other already existing teams, and that MAYBE caddy will build him an engine/trans combo later. so F1 says that's not going to make things more competitive and new, just more of the same and we already have enough of that.

do i have that substantially right?

GM signed a deal with Andretti to be their exclusive supplier, but the engine won't be ready until 2028 (F1 engines are quite complicated), so Andretti was going to be a customer of one of the existing engine suppliers in the interim. They were trying to get on the grid next year so they could take advantage of the $200 million anti-dilution entry fee based on the current concord agreement, but the existing teams think this is not enough to cover the smaller pieces of the pie that would come from having 11 teams on the grid vs. 10. They just came up with the excuse that Andretti wouldn't be competitive from the get go. Well Duh! that is always the case. The just want to delay Andretti's entry so they can continue to maximize their income with a much larger entry fee in the new concord agreement.

Andretti argued that with their history and pedigree, that they would bring a lot more to F1 by growing the overall pie with the additional interest from US fans, not to mention that they already have a long history of racing in IndyCar, but FOM isn't buying that argument, so they said no, for now.

Let the lawsuits begin.

i can tell you, personally, andretti would not be any kind of a draw for me.
now if they could talk derek bell into joining, that would be different

F1 said that before that stage, "the need for any new team to take a compulsory power-unit supply, potentially over a period of several seasons, would be damaging to the prestige and standing of the championship"

You know, the championship with 10 teams running 1 of 4 power units.

What a fucking joke. I can't believe they would put out a statement like that when it's just a bunch of obviously hypocritical bullshit. All those lawyers and that's the best they can do?

Their statement should have just read, "(Prize money/11)<(Prize money/10)."

I had a brief brush with Mario Andretti in the paddock of the old Houston race. He almost hit me on his scooter. :bigg:

Hamilton to Scuderia Ferrari next season, eh? That'll make this season spicy.

The silly season has started early. If this move to Ferrari is true, I wonder who Mercedes will replace him with?

I've met Mario and Michael a couple times at some charity events and they were plenty nice

An Andretti team would, without question, bring American fans to F1. The problem is they'll also show up to the races. LOL And I'd be willing to bet that was considered with their application.

not sure if that ^^ refers to the american fans ....or.....the andrettis

Wow, didn't see that coming! I can't imagine Mercedes would want Sainz. Sainz said his next ride “will be announced in due course.”

Sainz is going to Sauber, since it is becoming an Audi works team, and his Dad already has ties to Audi with the Dakar rally (which he won this year).

He will likely get a multi year deal. Then when Audi comes in he will be well established with the team.

Sensible business decision but it's hard to imagine Carlos being satisfied with not competing for podiums in the Stake car.
There's a bunch of interesting possibilities for the '25 season shaping up, especially with the second red bull seat potentially in the mix.
