HNPD - Xotic EP Boost

Well, I understand that I can play a Ab chord and add a G#, which, in my mind, are the same notes, but I have heard that they are not actually exactly the same notes...

oh dear god...

...I got into this argument with a guy in college, who INSISTED that Ab and G# were NOT the same...even though they were played at the same place on the guitar...

you would need a fretless instrument in order for them to be different notes. technically, he was right. practically, you were right.

would they not vibrate at the same speed?
thereby be the same note.
?

on a fretless instrument, they occur at two different places on the fretboard. very close together, but still not in the same place. the frets erase that distinction and the change is now in name only. so no, they would not vibrate at the same speed.

Interesting. Please help me out here. I never took music theory.

If G and A are one whole step apart, Ab is a half step below A, and B# is a half step above B, then how are they not the same thing? What am I missing?

it's all relative to the key you're playing in. each note is a certain distance away from the next. we've standardized that with frets and piano keys, "tempering" the tuning so that we can play in multiple keys, and creating "do-all" instruments that eliminate wolf-tones.

this is a really good demonstration:

Did a comparison video using a plethora of preamps next to my latest
Billy Brain duo channel preamp for guitar and electric bass.

guitar and amp employed: Gretsch SSLVO w/ tvjones t-armonds and tru-arc,
amp is a ron williams design ac30/trainwreck w/ a tophat 212 cab

here is the follow up vid i hammered out with the telecaster..
this time the Xotic is at 18v with no boosts employed (internal switches off) and the Billy brain is just barely on at its standard 9v... I had the kid shoot on the iphone that I stuffed into imovie for you. 100% iphone to mac to youtube .

I finally pulled the trigger on one of these guys. Hot damn! I don't really want to exaggerate too much, but it does feel like it turns my tele into a LP. Maybe not exactly, but it definitely gets close.

It's a great pedal..when I first got mine I was really into how it colored the sound but not so much anymore. I have the RC Booster too that I use as my primary boost and then if I need a clean lead sound I usually stack the two pedals and it sounds awesome.

Congrats :thu:

If you have a strat, try it with that too. You will get that kind of Texas Special sound yet not over done. A certain presence that is just too sweet and bold!

Same here. Makes a great sounding amp even better!
