I'm giving up playing the guitar

I saw a guy a few years back in a tribute band called Led Zep Again, who absolutely nailed it. He had the Page live slop down cold. Plus he had the moves and the dragon suit. It was something to behold.
They played the Rain Song, and it was amazing.

I think someone would have to wear the guitar low slung in order to have the same hand position. You can’t imitate Page with a proper left hand, thumb on the middle back of the neck posture. His style is really related to his fingers going diagonally across the frets.

I think you guys are missing the point.

Wouldn't it be nice to have the ability to play like Yngwie, even if you had no desire to actually do so?

Not for me. I have zero interest having Yngwie guitar skills. I play guitar for fun and my own enjoyment. I can't imagine playing like that being fun (not too mention you'd have no life outside of practicing guitar) and I wouldn't enjoy playing it.

I stopped watching videos like these years ago. Why? Because while they're technically proficient, they have absolutely zero character or personality in their playing - which is what made Yngwie so great. He had that in spades. Now some may not like that personality, but nobody can argue that he doesn't have his very own style.

These asian kids though (like most modern Metal players) have absolutely no identity. They're just good at what they do and are just...forgettable.

Malcolm Young was a limited player but he had one thing he was fucking great at, and no other player on the planet sounded like him.
Be like Malcolm. Find the thing you're great at that no one else does.

Angus always said that Malcolm was actually the better of the two of them, not?

I'm sure one could construct a robot that could do that, but why? The only thing I see and hear is speed. No interpretation, no soul, just blind repetition and muscle memory...

She’s just a kid. She’s developing technique and learning music theory that will last her a lifetime. It’s no different from a violin player learning to shred complicated minuets.

I want to hear a song with soul like “all star” or “the final countdown”. Classic and enduring pieces of music that will last the eons.

this girl’s music just doesn’t speak to me. I’m sorry, kid. Back to the orphanage for you.

Honestly, the only child prodigy that ever really made his own way was Derek Trucks, and even he is still in the shadow of skydog. All the rest are soullessly replicating scales with no musicianship to speak of other than speed.

This kid killed it. Has the feel down from the beginning, which is infinitely harder than playing scales.

No.

Just as an example.

I'll concede that these kids are far more.technically proficient that Ill ever be. But none of em seem like they're having much fun.
I bet they'd love cooking eggs with Gordon Ramsey. All speed and intensity, but for what?

Fun that we've discussed Yngwie. He's one of the very few that will still be remembered in 3o years time.
Along with Eddie and Randy he revolutionised guitar playing, whether you like it or not. From the 80s he's one of the 3 players we all will remember.

All of these young asians can copy the mechanics, but none of them will invent and revolutionize like Yngwie did. They're just learning how to play the songs.

And that's the thing -- how many Japanese guitarists can you name? All of these kids can play that, but no one really cares at the end of the day. What are they doing with that ability? It's impressive, to a point, but there are a billion kids who can do the same.
Akira Takasaki

People probably said the same thing about Eddie and Yngwie when they were kids copying Hendrix note for note.

She's really talented obviously!

...but she grew up in a YouTube generation that can learn absolutely anything from quantum physics to how to speak ancient Sumerian, literally at their fingertips.

I think that they do take it for granted, & a lot of what kids can do now seems to be based on parroting what they read on tabs ( versus ear training via transcribing, & understanding in a deeper musical sense ). I have done both in my life and I can tell you with absolute confidence that one teaches patterns, & one gives total freedom!

Not trying to be negative about her at all- she's super cool and talented- I just think that this learning method really loses something in the process, which may be why there are a zillion people in Youtubeland who can play like someone else down to the fine details, but virtually nobody with anything really to say creatively. there are exceptions of course.

It's also a severe mistake to equate shred guitar with great musical value. It's quite literally the difference between Yngwie Malmsteen & Bach .

More power to her though, she's young & she will grow & change.
