The shittiness of music lawsuits continues...

Yeah that Photograph one Ed got done for was a pretty hard one to argue against to be honest but THAT ^ is fucking ridiculous. Marvin Gaye's estate doesn't own the rights to the I, III, IV, V chord progression.
 
The first thing I thought of when I first heard that song was Let's Get It On.
But no, you can't own the rights to a chord progression.

I don't care who it is, I don't want this to be the new weekly thing. Art has always inspired art. It the crossroads with commerce and business run by people who give not one shit about art that is causing this shit.

As I've posted in other threads, unless you're copping everything (harmonic, melodic, rhythmic, and lyrical content)...sue and win big. But no one owns any harmonic structure exclusively. Melodies can be picked out of countless songs, so by itself it is not something that can of should be subject to copyright. Rhythms and the grooves and feels, also not ownable as far as I'm concerned. Lyrics maybe, but the subject matter, the grouping of cliched notions and sentiments that make up most lyrics...no fucking way.

Sad times for music when the children of the creators are filing claims instead of...I don't know....working and creating for themselves?

vanilla ice (ice ice baby) was a blatant rip off. no other way around that. and that is a good example of how to compare one song to another. he didn't take a bit and a piece....he took the whole riff, note for note. and that riff clearly did not exist before queen.

Technically he added one note every second time around the Under Pressure riff.

Still a rip off though.

I never did too until just before I posted above to make sure.

I remember back when his lawsuit was going he was doing an interview and he stated that because the extra note was added, it wasn't the same.

Hopefully the plaintiffs will lose in court and be ordered to pay costs. Two or three expensive losses like that will put an end to this.

Like, not even a little bit. This should be thrown right out, the plaintiff forced to pay all costs and the plaintiff's attorney censured for bringing frivolous bullshit before the court.
 
This is a byproduct of plummeting sales.
Now publishers are starting to cannibalize each other for scraps of the ever-shrinking revenue pie.
