We need a new HR person at work.....

Our HR manager does all the initial screening and the initial interviews and passes on her approved candidates to the dept managers for the second interview. All except for one manager who short circuits her initial screening and does that himself.

We just got another new hire in the office today. Now I am not a creepy old man (yet...), but it is kinda nice to have maybe just a LITTLE bit of eye candy around the office. Given my work environment all the ladies dress pretty conservatively, but a pretty face and a couple nice rear ends do help the day seem a bit brighter. Same could be said for hiring good looking guys for the ladies to admire.

So a new hire just came through to be introduced. And yeah....yet another overweight 50+ year old lady. Not attractive. This is about the 8th in a row. And yes, our HR person is a 50+ lady (but not overweight) but come on....

I worked at a restaurant after college and every waitress we hired was smoking hot. We didn't hire them because they were hot, it was just that only hot girls seemed to apply. One girl liked to not wear a bra and it was amazing but we had to ask her to start wearing one. Fortunately, the other manager lost and had to tackle that conversation.

Given the rampant age discrimination in hiring practices these days, it's nice to know that some places are still hiring people based on qualifications regardless of age.

Sorry you have to look at unattractive women. But ugly people need jobs too.
Why do you think I'm self employed...:(

Slartibartfast, the patron saint for fugly workers!

I don't care what color, size, or sex someone is as long as they self start and can do the work with a minimum of drama (and that they don't smell).

Having been discriminated (reverse discrimination is what they used to call it) when applying for the local big city fire department still bothers me 2 decades later. I remember having to write "W/M" (for white male) in the folder tab next to my name that held the 30-something page application. Each academy class had 70 people with a limit of 7 white males and the rest was mixed race and gender, etc. To be one of the 7, you had to know someone at the senior captain lever or higher. The average fail/drop out rate for the 7 was 0% while the rest of the classes had a high percentage of fail/drop outs.

The 7 were almost always experienced and knew what they were getting into, just like I was. Knowing that so many others got an easy slot only to fail, denied quite a few of us who paid our way through a college fire academy. I believe the city was going way out of their way to make up for past discrimination practices, or appease a few council members or special interest groups.

About 27 years ago I applied to be a Denver County sheriff (ie. Denver County jail guard)

I blew through the first two interviews with very high marks - aced the psych exam - passed the physical with no problems. So I was only one step away from being hired (for a probationary period like all new hires there). I had one more interview at the county jail along with a tour. During the tour I noticed that not a single one of the jail guards were white males. Not one.

And no - I didn't get the job.

I do get the age thing....I am at that age.

The best one was when my friend and I went to Cleveland for training. We attended at different times but this one time we happened to go together. Since we had no Hooters in SoCal my first visit to a Hooters was great. Pretty girls with nice assets. I told my friend about it and when we went for training, he made a request to attend Hooters after I told him all about it. We go and our waitress was a short gal whose wouldn't have required a bra. He told me: "Just my luck that I would get the server where my chest is larger than hers!" lmbo

If there's anyone that's gotten a raw deal in this country it's the white male.

Back in the day when working for a large audio chain, I had to hire the cashiers for the store. There really weren't any qualifications to be had you just had be be trained to work a basic cash register. I always hire gals that were easy on the eyes for the stores. In the application there was a question asking if you had ever been bounded. One time a gal asked me what that meant. I told her with tongue firmly in cheek that is where we take you in the back and tie you up. She said okay, that's fine.

Some good stories from my work HR department, and the former director thereof.

1. A Scottish man was hired as an assistant professor and he was in HR for orientation. She told him that his English was very good for a foreigner. He responded with "thank you, we invented it, you know".

2. She argued for 20 minutes with another professor when he produced his official ID documents with her position based on the fact that Maryland is not a state. It might be a 'state', but it isn't, you know, a 'state state'. The poor guy was dumbfounded on how to respond. He pointed at his driver's license and the fact that it said 'State of Maryland' across the top.

3. A guy I know really well had a baby and needed to update insurance docs to represent the changes in benefits. The HR director told him the baby needed to sign the forms. He responded, "well, yeah, she is a baby, so she can't sign stuff". She insisted he get a signature before she could proceed. He ultimately drew a crooked line across the form.

4. Her final day of employment was when she apparently went insane and asked a Seek man if he was a terrorist or knew any terrorists during his orientation, and how this might be an issue for his background check and FBI clearance. She explained that she saw that he was from the UK, but had to ask because of the turban. She was gone that afternoon. I'm good friends with the man, and he still tells that story all the time as the worst evidence of discrimination he has ever seen....and this is from a kid growing up Seek in east London in the 70's.

Wow.

All I have is the story of the guy in IT saying, "The problem is we have too many chiefs and not enough... uh... not chiefs"

I forgot that the same idiot wanted me to take an English proficiency exam before I was admitted to the faculty of the graduate school, to be sure I spoke English well enough to teach courses. I pointed out to her that although my name has 13 letters in it and is impossible to pronounce, I was born in Wisconsin and lived in the US my entire life.
