Is this really a thing?

I never use batteries with my pedals but I thought I would use a 9v for my new wah-wah's pedal to make life easier. I haven't used the pedal more than turning it on to make sure it worked when I got it it but I figured I would use it on some recordings this week so I got some batteries. With the new battery in the pedal it didn't sound very good, which I figured was because I wasn't accustomed to this particular wah. After last night's livestream I shut everything off but forgot to unplug the cable from my pedal and when I came in to teach this morning thought that I had wasted the battery but now after having the cable plugged in for 20+ hours the pedal actually has more usable range in the sweep of the wah. I know all of the Eric Johnson battery BS and how some fuzz pedals work better with batteries but does that apply to brand new made in 2020 was pedals? Should I shop for those stupid zinc-carbon batteries instead of what I'm using and just expect to change batteries more often?

really

Have you taken a voltage reading on the battery to see if it's really dropped?
you could do some voltage and amp readings on that one and another new in package to compare.

Just did. Apparently it's 8.78v

Maybe my ears needed a rest.

It is possible considering that the Crybaby circuit does have two transistors in it, like a Fuzz Face, and they need to be biased correctly. Maybe the slightly dead battery put the bias voltage in a range it liked better.

Maybe a rechargeable battery, learn how much to charge it?
