It really sounds like a THD Hot Plate is what you need, EJD. Get a good amp, plug the hot plate into the mix, and you should be good to go. In my experience, pretty much all tube amps I've tried, no matter how low the wattage, all are way too loud for home practice. Get a hot plate. With that...

All I know about hockey is I like the St. Louis Blues for some reason. And I hear they're not doing so well.

This should probably give you an idea of their music. I'm not a fan personally, but they do have their merits. They slay live, though, for entertainment value. Particularly their drum battles; the vocalist is also an accomplished drummer, and they tend to battle it out in their shows.

Normally, I'd be running things through my Cornford Hellcat (2 channel head) with a minimum of pedals. These days, the amp is broken, the footswitch is broken, and I'm playing on a friend's amp. Using a noise gate for it, since it (an ENGL) is a bit too wild for my tastes.
