F*CKF*CKF*CKF*CK... Tom Petty in critical conditon after cardiac arrest

Too soon?

I was listening to his greatest hits earlier tonight. He cranked out hits the way Queen did. And without getting too goofy in the 80s the way Queen did.

So, I crashed before it happened, was confirmed, or made official...what have you.

This and Cornell are two of the most devistating musical loses of my life. I grew up on Tom pretty much thanks to MTV and then classic rock radio. Just great tunes with perfect arrangements and accompaniment. Mike and Benmont have lost their musical brother.

Tom is an American music legend and icon. A flag bearer that was eventually welcomed into the pantheon of the "gods"...and rightfully so.

Peace to him and his loved ones.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - greatest American band? I was thinking about it on the way into work today. I'd say certainly top 5 ,when you consider longevity and consistent quality of the output. Probably bands that had higher highs, but most either flamed out quickly or started to coast in their later years.

Plenty of great songs have been posted already. Here's my favorite from the early days.
It is impossible for me to not sing along every time I hear it.

I won't post a specific song. I will say that when people would talk about half-time Superbowl entertainment, I would quietly think about the 2008 show Tom and the boys put on. Just doing their thing, very well and professionally. I recall that was pretty impressed. And of course all the rest of the childhood into early adulthood and on and on memories. Rest in peace.

Tom Petty and Elvis Costello probably wrote about 20% of the songs I play day to day, and it's hard to believe that now there won't be any more Petty songs.

Not to mention B-sides.

He’s not someone I really ever listen to, and yet I feel like I know pretty much his entire catalogue. While I’m not a big fan, and while I think it’s worth admitting that he wasn’t perfect and that he made his share of duds, he’s definitely the kind of songwriter than I admire most; the consummate craftsman who cared about both the minute details and the big picture. And that produced a ton of terrific songs.

Anyway, though it kinda pains me to admit it, I am a little worried for tompetty. Will be following the Halifax news.
