Sounds like you may be better off sending the car to Victory Auto Wreckers and renting a car one way for the trip.Broken (it was working fine last season, but is blowing totally non-cooled air this summer).
The car (95 corolla) has been on its last legs for a while now (sagging engine mounts, all sorts of road and wind noise, check engine light has been on for years now for an emissions issue (it's old enough to count as an antique and be exempt from emissions testing locally), some electrical issues, it's developed a new intermittent stuttering thing where it loses power briefly, etc... A new (used) car is in my near future, but it would make much more sense to buy in NC (way cheaper taxes and fees), so I'd like to be able to nurse it along long enough for the move if I can. I'm going to take it in next week to get some estimates on what it would take to make sure it's at least safe; not sure I'm up for a drive to/in NC in the summer with no AC either
Has anybody done a welfare check on Peen? I'm concerned about him....haven't heard a peep since this heatwave approached Chicago
yep, that's on the table too. Once I get estimates for various fixes I'll compare to the cost for rentals, etcSounds like you may be better off sending the car to Victory Auto Wreckers and renting a car one way for the trip.

just get a can of the refill thingy and fill it up....or buy a bag of Ice and place it where the center console would be....then get one of those cig lighter socket mini fans and place that behind the ice so it blows on you.....poor mans AC !No AC in mine either. One of those refill mcthingys worked for a year but after that I wasn't driving enough to bother.

if that is the 400 sq ft one it looks nice. It's interesting to see sublets because afaik they aren't allowed here (every lease I've ever signed stated so) seems like subletting would open the door for investment bros to make profit and corner the market on availiable rentals.Sniffing out garden apartment sublet three doors down from metra tracks in peen park. Any idea on how much noise, vibration there may or may not be? Don't want to link but search "newly painted" under sublets on craiglist. Will rent by the month, which I would like in order to find a regular lease.
Was sent an application. Is this language typical? I'm not familiar with subleasing applications at all and haven't rented in 20 years. Also inherently skeptical and currently very tired.

My parents, and later myself, owned an apartment building across the street and two doors down from Metra tracks. Many trains used those tracks. Once you get used to the noise and minor earthquakes from them, it's not too bad. But they are LOUD, and will likely be disturbing at first.Sniffing out garden apartment sublet three doors down from metra tracks in peen park. I've never lived closer than ~5 blocks or so to the L tracks (and have never found train sound an issue at that distance) - The metra tends to go a lot faster than the L and makes more noise and obviously at that distance I'm guessing it would definitely be noticeable, but probably something you could get used to with time.
I also haven't encountered that sort of thing on a rental app, but I've only actually applied for a rental once here in Chicago, and it wasn't a sublet. It doesn't seem unreasonable though - is it an individual or a management company?
laundry in-unit is a plus, and it does look like it would be relatively quiet as far as people/street noise, just the train and probably the expressway
Yeah, that’s along the Milwaukee District North Line tracks — which is Metra and Amtrak. That and the expressways will be noisy, but for a short term rental you could do worse.
Where's Rada? Where's IKE? Where's yabba?
That seems like a good general approach.Barely talked to the person but it either seems to be a lone bloke or a smaller company. Can't find anything conntected to them. Trying to stay away from teh big companies and would rather be in a house or small building anyway, plus I like the idea of being near that north branch greenway, so been been looking more westerly. Although there's so much available in rogers park that i've been considering that too.

The north branch path/set of forest preserves is nice - it's the closest way to get into some actual woods from Roger's Park. Back when I was running big miles I would regularly head from my place down to La Bagh woods, and make a loop along the path (or drive to Harm's woods in Skokie, also along the same path, which is the nearest single track trails). You can get all the way up to the Botanic Gardens on the north branch path
Same. Closer in, there's also the north shore channel path (it's a significantly narrower green line, though) and a bit further out, the Des Plaines River trail (which also runs through a chain of forest preserves, like the north branch trail) goes from around O'Hare all the way up to WisconsinLong green lines on google maps get me hot and bothered.

DPRT and Cal Sag intersection = Palos? (Spears woods, Bullfrog Lake, Wolf Road, etc) if so, that's my favorite of the forest preserves, because of some quirk of geology, it actually has hills (and the best single track trails in the area). Sadly a bit of a driving commitment from up here, so I didn't make it down there as much as I would have liked toYeah, I been pretty greenway-fixated when searching. There was a place right across the river from the DP trail in Franklin Park but it doesn't seem too pedestrian/bike-friendly there otherwise. I was initially interested in finding something southwest with access to that big block of preserves where the DP and Cal Sag meet, and then that homer glen underdeveloped corrider going all the way out to farm country, but not exactly a rental bonanza around there.
