Shooting out the Epiphone vs Gibson 339 tonight

Ive fought the battle of trying to love the 335/339 semi hollow concept. 335s are uncomfortable for me to play. It's also the reason I dont have a firebird. I agree with the blanket assessment with the epiphone pickups. I did coax some nice tones out of it by coil tapping one pup and using the middle position pickup switch...

FWIW, I briefly had the Epi 339 recently, and for the money, think it's another of their recent great-for-the-money axes; however, the transition away from the ProBuckers is disappointing, as I think they are the best non-Gibby stock pickups Epi has used.

The standard 339s (the "Pros") can be had dirt cheap in the used section at MF (Right now there's a level 2 one in cherry for $319 less 10% for the holiday sale).

All that said, I'd stay away from the "Ultra" version, as it seem the added electronics are VERY problematic. MF has like 27 in their used section .

I just dont dig the 339 at all. I'd rather have a 335, but I'm also an "economy sized" person :embarrassed:

Apparently some people have gotten decent results out of the Alnico Pro Epi pickups by using a hairdrier to remove all of the external wax and swapping in different magnets. Not GREAT results, but better than how they were shipped from the factory.

The ProBuckers that some models are shipping with are supposed to be infinitely better. Rumor has it they may actually be Toneriders, too.

I'm late to this thread. I've got the Gibson. I got it new for $1700. Was totally worth it to me. I'd be interested in an Epi as a spare, though. I love the 339. I'm also pretty short.

Holy necropost, Batman!

I came across this thread via Google. A couple of weeks ago, I picked up a 2012 Epi 339 at a pawn shop for $220. It needed a new wiring harness. That was $40. It has Epi Probucker Alnico Classic pickups.

While the neck isn't as nice as my Gibson 335, it's not bad. I like thick necks. The Probuckers aren't bad either, but I'm considering rewiring it with a Burstbucker 1 and 2 set that I have on the shelf. This is a great $260 guitar. I'm not sure it's with spending $1500 on a Gibson 339.

This.

I recently picked up an Epi Dot 335 for 250 with an amp. I'm REALLY happy with value for money on my purchase. I can put the 1250 saved towards other stuff (like pedals!!)

Same pickups. They sound perfectly acceptable. But. I have not played the guitar at volume yet. The SD Seth Lover pickups seem to be a popular choice as a replacement set ( https://www.sweetwater.com/store/de...duncan-seth-lover-humbucker-pickup-set-nickel ) especially for maintaining a fatter, warmer sound. I don't need this guitar to be hot.

Neck is fine. Certainly not my Les Paul Custom neck, but I've come around to it. Plays quite nice. I do want to replace the plastic nut.
